Top 10 Most Powerful Computers in the World. Ever wondered which are the most powerful supercomputers of all time? Supercomputers which with their supersonic speed broke various computing barriers and also brought in revolution in varied fields like nuclear science, medicine, environment and weather. The computing power of these computers is way beyond your imagination. Take the world's most powerful computer, the IBM Roadrunner. A new ADDITION >> China has recentrly taken top spot by China’s Tianhe-1A (Milky Way) to be the fast computer in the world. The Tianhe-1A is located at China’s National Supercomputer Centre in Tianjin with much of its processing power from chips similar to those found in graphics cards. While four of the top 10 super computers are also designed around graphics processors, second placed US XT5 Jaguar is built around the more traditional CPUs, similar to those found in desktop computers.
1. Cray-1
Cray-1 was the world’s fastest machine that was installed at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1976. Cray-1 boasted a speed of 160 million floating-point operations per second. The first model of the Cray-1 (Cray-1A) weighed 5.5 tons.
2. Cray-2
Launched in 1985, the machine held the title of the world’s fastest supercomputer between 1985-1989. Cray-2 was capable of 1.9 gigaflops peak performance. Cray-2 was predominantly developed for the United States Departments of Defense and Energy. Due to the use of liquid cooling, it was nicknamed `Bubbles’.
3. Connection Machine-5 (CM-5)
Launched in 1991, Connection Machine-5 (CM-5) held the crown for the world’s fastest supercomputer in 1992. The machine intended for artificial intelligence applications and symbolic processing found remarkable success in the field of computational science.
4. Fujitsu Numerical Wind Tunnel
Known as the Numerical Wind Tunnel, the machine was built by Fujitsu and Japan’s National Aerospace Laboratory. The machine was used to simulate wind turbulence on airplanes and in spacecraft as well as to forecast weather.
5. ASCI Red
The fastest computer from June 1997 to June 2000, ASCI Red was collaboration between Intel Corp and Sandia Labs. It was the first computer to break the teraflops barrier, which after the processor upgrade passed 2 teraflops.
6. ASCI White
ASCI White, an IBM system, replaced ASCI-Red as the fastest supercomputer in 2000. ASCI White held the spot for world’s fastest supercomputer for two years from 2000-2002. It was capable of computing 12.3 trillion operations per second.
7. The Earth Simulator
Built by NEC for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and the Japan Marina Science and Technology Center, the Earth Simulator (ES) was the fastest supercomputer in the world from 2002 to 2004.
8. Blue Gene/L
Blue Gene/L doubles its processing power to 32000 two-processor nodes. Currently the seventh fastest supercomputer in the world, IBM BlueGene/L held the title of world’s fastest supercomputer for four years from 2004 to 2008. The supercomputer is located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s. BlueGene/L (BGL) clocked 478.2 trillion floating operations per second. Blue Gene/L, already ranked as the fastest supercomputer on the planet, has been doubled in size, according to researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California.
9. IBM Roadrunner
IBM Roadrunner was crowned No. 1 in June 2008 after becoming the first supercomputer to break one petaflop/s. IBM’s Roadrunner managed 1.042 petaflops. The supercomputer is located at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
10. Jaguar
The world’s fastest supercomputer according to TOP500 supercomputer list of 2009 is Cray XT5, also known as Jaguar. Jaguar bagged the No. 1 spot, beating IBM’s Roadrunner, who held the top crown from 2008 to 2009. It can perform more than 1 quadrillion calculations per second.

World’s Most Expensive Netbook 2011 Priciest and Prettiest of Zen Art Netbooks is here. Netbooks, smaller and less powerful laptops meant to be used in conjunction with a host of web-based applications, entered the public consciousness with the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Association’s goal of distributing the ultraportable computers throughout developing countries. Now netbooks like Asus’ Eee PC and Acer’s Aspire One are starting to overtake the laptop PC market.
So, you know, eventually someone will have to go and stick some diamonds on one.
Until then, the most expensive netbook in the world is this unique Aspire One painted in the Kyo Yuzen tradition by UFO-Hayashi, a Japanese artist known for his work on iPods, phones and other gadgets. The painting represents life in its spring, rebounding after the long and cold winter. Painting the device took the artist around three months to finish and shavings from nautilus shells were used in the process.
As for its specs, the unique netbook features the Aspire One’s typical 1.6 GHz Atom processor, 1 GB memory and a 120 GB hard drive.
The world’s most expensive netbook is up for grabs on eBay until May 1st with a starting bid of $3,000.
We’ve heard of designer netbooks by the dozen, with innovative covers, features and sizes, being on the experiment mode every day across the globe. But how about possessing the most expensive netbook in the world? The most expensive that is. So far, Sony VAIO P netbook was touted as the most highly priced one.
But another netbook has come to beat even Sony Vaio. Fukuyuki from Japan is selling an Acer Aspire One for $ 3,000 reportedly. Why such a big price? Apparently, the netbook has gone through a round of decoration, by a well known Japanese artist UFO-Hayashi
The artist in question is one of the most famous gadget artists in Japan. He is known for his painting on iPods, phones, Personal Computers and many other digital gadgets.
What is special about his painting, is that he uses the traditional Japanese Zen painting method called `kyo-yu-zen’. This kind of painting has a history of more than 1,300 years. Hayashi’s products are often used as props in Japanese domestic dramas.
This work of art has been put together painstakingly, over three months. The result is stupefying. Lovely floral embellishments spreading out over the cover, giving it that palatial look.
The $3,000 netbook looks befitting for queens and kings in their palaces! While light and less expensive, are the selling catchwords for laptops normally, this one is arguably the most beautiful looking netbook till now. Most Expensive Supercomputer in the US 2011. IBM’s BlueGene/L machine is both the fastest and most expensive supercomputer ever built in the United States. It was built at the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The supercomputer is built from 64 racks of Blue Gene servers, each of which contains 1,024 700MHz dual-core PowerPC processors. A profile of the Cray CX1 desktop supercomputer. Specifications listed on LLNL’s website about their BlueGene/L system
are as follows:

BlueGene/L currently tops the TOP500 Supercomputer Sites list with a Linpack performance benchmark of 280.6 TFlop/s.
IBM sells a single 1,024 processor BlueGene rack for approximately $2,000,000. The BlueGene/L supercomputer was built by IBM for the DoE along with the ASCI Purple supercomputer that benchmarks at 63.39 TFlop/s as part of a $290,000,000 contract. The supercomputers will both be used for nuclear weapons simulations.

They can cost over a hundred million pounds to build and very few organisations can afford to purchase one. They are mainly used by large universities who do a lot of research projects such as scientific research, weather modelling etc and by large organisations such as pharmaceutical companies for drug research or by the military for weapons research.
Whilst supercomputers are working, they generate so much heat that they need to be housed in specifically designed rooms with environmental controls and air conditioning systems. It is vital that the atmosphere is kept free of dust particles and special filters are used to keep the air clean.

World’s Most Expensive Computer 2011 The Japanese government estimates the Earth Simulator cost $400,000,000, making it the most expensive computer ever built. The budget for the Earth Simulator project was authorized for the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) and the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC) in 1997, and NEC Corporation made the winning bid for the Japanese project. By May 2002, the 640 processor node supercomputer was benchmarked with Linpack as having 35.86 TFlop/s performance. This gave it the top spot on the TOP500 Supercomputer Sites list until 2004 when IBM’s BlueGene/L supercomputer took its place using an architecture that cost less than half as much to implement.
Each processor node in the Earth Simulator contains 8 vector processors running at 500MHz with 16GB of shared memory, and the total main memory in the machine is 10 terabytes. The operating system running on the supercomputer is NEC’s UNIX-based OS called “SUPER-UX” which is used on NEC’s SX Series of supercomputers.
This expensive computer is used for a wide variety of international projects, most of which are related to atmospheric, climate, and oceanographic simulation.
